BLACK JUNGLE
BY AFROGLYPHICS
IS OUT NOW

Black Jungle, the new Audio Document from AFROGLYPHICS ® by Pianist, Composer and Music Educator Ashby Anderson. Inspired by the "Art of The Negro Murals" by Hale Woodruff (1900-1980), BLACK JUNGLE - is a sonic mural that mirrors Woodruff's visual documentation of Black cultural achievement through the untamed abundance of Black Music. From African Drums to Jazz, Calypso to Hip Hop, Blues to Gospel. One song. Multiple traditions, infinite possibilities. The song itself is the story. BLACK JUNGLE further derives it's title through the lens of viewing Black Music Culture as a wild and untamed spectrum containing various intellectual and intuitive inputs, approaches and styles developed by Black People the world over for millennia. As a Recording Artist, Pianist, Composer for Big Bands and smaller music ensembles, Ashby has amassed a great deal of knowledge through his 40 year music journey. His music encompasses Contemporary,Traditional, Avant-garde and Orchestral musics developed by Black Musicians. In "BLACK JUNGLE" Ashby has reached a new plateau while crafting a completely original style for his approach to piano, improvisation, composition and orchestration. Ashby calls his music "AFROGLYPHICS®"; a term he developed and trademarked in order to define his music as a separate identity within the Black Cultural Experience and to describe the influences that permeate his unique and great personal experience as a Black Musician. By using African Symbolism, Geometry, Architecture, Black Art, Black History and Culture as influential factors in his life as a Black Artist and by developing those experiences into harmonic inventions, melodic structures and compositions, Ashby sounds like himself. While you hear or sense nuances of pianists like Duke Ellington, McCoy Tyner, Joe Sample, Thelonious Monk and many others in his playing, he has developed quite an original approach over the last few years that favors a very rhythmic, heavy left hand coupled with very articulate right hand phrases during his solos. BLACK JUNGLE as a whole contains sonorities of the African Diaspora, R&B, Music of the Black Church, the music of Duke Ellington, Bebop, Hard Bop, 1970's Fusion with Hip Hop influenced Drums and Music Production approaches. The new work features other recording artists; Ashby's son Drew Ashby on Trumpet and Vocalist Chris Scholar. The work uses the syllables " Jaambi-Go-Jaambi-Ya" sung by Chris Scholar as a nod to the song "Beijo' by Earth, Wind and Fire and their defining role in Black Music during the 1970's. Black Jungle also pays Tribute with a gritty Fender Rhodes solo near the end of the song which was inspired by Ramsey Lewis' solo on the Song "Sun Goddess" by Earth, Wind & Fire. Drew Ashby completes the work through his exceptional ability on Trumpet sharing the arranging tasks with Ashby Anderson. His productions skill round out the track with a modern approach to recording that Drew applies to make this music sound like today by specifically tracking individual parts in instead of recording everyone at the same time. This new work is the first installment of musical stories by AFROGLYPHICS which opens a window in to thier new style and approach that has developed organically since 2021. The insistence that all music be about and represent positive images of Black Culture is a major feature of AFROGLYPHICS and this parallels with the actual art work by Hale Woodruff that inspired this music. This download includes educational material on Hale Woodruff and a condensed score and notes from the recording session. Enjoy this music more through and increased understanding of it's inspiration and dive deep into thought about the various concepts shared. Music is a tool for transferring knowledge and understanding, it was never meant to be consumed without context. Music is always a story not simply sound, it's role is to enhance the mind and life of the listener, so listen with intent, explore with the mind and enjoy with the heart.
